1. What it is
Coherent, Inc. (NYSE: COHR, ~$58.5B market cap) makes lasers, laser-based systems, optical components, and transceivers used across industrial materials processing, scientific instrumentation, telecom, and — increasingly the dominant growth driver — AI datacenter interconnect (optical transceivers, indium-phosphide lasers, and co-packaged optics for connecting GPU clusters). Two reporting segments: laser sources/OEM components, and industrial lasers/integrated systems. Fiscal year ends June 30.
2. The exponential thesis
Coherent sits directly in the AI-datacenter "connectivity" bottleneck, not the compute-silicon bottleneck. As GPU clusters scale (Nvidia's Vera Rubin generation, Spectrum-X, NVLink fabric extensions), the interconnect layer — optical transceivers and eventually co-packaged/silicon photonics — has to scale alongside it, and this is a real, physically-necessary bottleneck rather than a narrative. Quant shows forward revenue growth of +21% with +32% acceleration (second derivative positive — growth is speeding up, not decaying), a negative PEG (-0.24, i.e., growth-adjusted valuation still cheap on a blended basis) and a healthy conviction score (+6.9 across 9 KB claims). This is the profile of a name still early in re-rating off a datacenter-driven demand cycle, not a story that's already fully priced.
FMP analyst estimates back this up with a steep forward revenue curve: FY2025 $5.81B (actual) → FY2026E $7.06B → FY2027E $9.66B → FY2028E $12.9B (the FY2029 $20.0B print looks like a wide-tailed/thin-coverage outlier and should be discounted). Quarterly trend is a clean, monotonic accelerating series (Dec-24 $1.43B → Mar-25 $1.50B → Jun-25 $1.53B → Sep-25 $1.58B → Dec-25 $1.69B → Mar-26 $1.81B) — this is a real, organic acceleration, not a lumpy one-off.
3. Financial health
- Revenue: FY2025 $5.81B, up from $4.71B (FY2024) and $5.16B (FY2023, post-merger noise year). Real multi-year growth reasserting itself after the 2022 Coherent/II-VI merger integration.
- Margins improving: gross margin 35.4% (FY2025) vs 30.9% (FY2024) — recovering off merger-integration lows (was 38% pre-merger in FY2021-22). Operating margin 9.4% (FY2025), up from 2.6% (FY2024) — a real operating-leverage inflection, not just top-line noise.
- Net income: $49M (FY2025), still thin (0.8% net margin) but a big improvement from -$156M (FY2024) and -$259M (FY2023). Bottom line still fragile — the improving trend matters more than the absolute level.
- Balance sheet: $909M cash, total debt $3.89B, net-debt/EBITDA down to 2.7x (FY2025) from 4.8x (FY2024) and 6.0x (FY2023) — meaningful de-leveraging as EBITDA recovers post-merger. Current ratio 2.19x — adequate liquidity. Working capital ~$2.1B, stable and healthy.
- Cash flow: Operating cash flow $634M, capex $441M, FCF $193M (FY2025) — FCF-positive but capex-heavy (running near 8% of revenue), consistent with a company investing hard into capacity for the AI cycle.
- Valuation optics on paper are noisy: trailing P/E is deeply negative/nonsensical (-171x, an artifact of thin FY2025 net income, not a real multiple) — use EV/EBITDA (~15.2x FY2025) and forward P/E off the $5.45 FY2026E EPS estimate (~67x at current price) as the more honest lens. Priced for continued acceleration, not cheap on trailing numbers.
4. Competitive position / moat
Coherent is one of a small handful of vertically-integrated laser/photonics suppliers (alongside Lumentum and, in overlapping niches, II-VI's legacy compound-semiconductor base which Coherent now owns) with the indium-phosphide and optical-component manufacturing scale to supply hyperscalers directly. Its moat is manufacturing know-how and capacity in compound semiconductors + vertical integration from raw laser diode to finished transceiver — a supply chain that's hard to stand up from scratch and where Nvidia has explicitly chosen to co-invest rather than vertically integrate away. Competitive risk comes from co-packaged optics (CPO) potentially disintermediating pluggable transceivers over time (Nvidia's own Spectrum-X CPO switch, produced with TSMC, is already in production) — a real multi-year technology-shift risk to monitor, not a near-term threat.
5. Valuation vs growth — priced in or room?
Quant PEG of -0.24 (using a blended forward-growth/est-growth denominator) suggests the stock is not overpaying for the growth on offer even after the run from the 52-week low of $84.35 to a recent high of $440 (currently $368.65, down 6.5% on the day sampled — notable single-day volatility, beta 2.05). EV/EBITDA at ~15x on FY2025 numbers is reasonable if the FY2026-28 estimate acceleration holds, but this is a name that has already re-rated hard (up >4x off the 52-week low) — much of the "this is an AI infrastructure name now" re-rating has plausibly happened. Room remains if the estimate curve (→$9.66B→$12.9B by FY2027-28) actually delivers; if growth merely meets rather than beats, the stock is closer to fair-to-full than cheap. Not a screaming bargain, but not obviously priced for perfection either.
6. What the panel says (KB)
Real, relevant coverage — not noise. Jensen Huang (Nvidia CEO), the highest-skill-weighted thinker in the KB on this topic, names Coherent directly and repeatedly across several 2026 appearances: - "Nvidia's multi-year investment in Lumentum, Coherent, and silicon photonics (COUPE) reshaped the supply chain into mainstream computing tech" (bullish, conviction 74, 2026-04-15). - "AI scales with connectivity, not just compute; optics/indium-phosphide lasers connecting distant chips are critical AI infrastructure — hence Nvidia's investment in Coherent" (bullish, conviction 85, 2026-06-16).
This is a genuinely convergent, high-conviction thread: the panel's most authoritative AI-infrastructure voice is naming Coherent specifically as a beneficiary of the optical-interconnect buildout, consistent with the quant acceleration. Caveat: coverage is narrow (a handful of claims, all from one thinker/source cluster) — there's no independent second voice corroborating or stress-testing the Coherent-specific thesis (broader silicon-photonics bullishness in the KB skews toward Nvidia, Marvell, and TSMC, with Coherent as a named beneficiary rather than the primary subject).
7. Key risks
- Co-packaged optics (CPO) disintermediation: if CPO displaces pluggable transceivers faster than expected, Coherent's core product category could face share/margin pressure from Nvidia-TSMC's own CPO push.
- Customer concentration: hyperscaler/Nvidia-ecosystem capex is lumpy; a slowdown in AI datacenter buildout would hit orders hard given how much of the growth reacceleration is AI-driven. Beta of 2.05 and single-day 6.5% drawdown in the sampled quote reflect this cyclicality.
- Thin net margins: 0.8% net margin FY2025 means small operating misses could swing GAAP profitability negative again (as in FY2023-24).
- Leverage still elevated: 2.7x net debt/EBITDA, improving but not yet conservative.
- Estimate-curve fragility: the steep FY2027-29 revenue ramp implied by consensus is a small-sample, wide-range estimate (FY2027 range $8.84B–$10.86B) — real, but wide enough to warrant skepticism on point estimates.
Data quality: full statement/estimate coverage available and internally consistent (quarterly trend ties to annual, balance sheet reconciles). No data-quality flags for COHR.
8. Verdict
Buy — Real exponential, not noise: clean accelerating quarterly revenue, improving margins/leverage, and a specific, high-conviction, high-skill panel thread (Jensen Huang) naming Coherent as a direct beneficiary of the AI optical-interconnect buildout. Valuation stance: fair-to-full after a >4x run off lows — priced for continued acceleration rather than cheap, so this is a "growth must keep delivering" buy, not a value one. Biggest risk: co-packaged optics (CPO) technology shift disintermediating pluggable transceivers, compounded by customer/AI-capex concentration risk (beta 2.05).
